Ari Marcopoulos is a lens artist, using both photography and video to document personal encounters, candid moments, or to capture a particular scene he experiences. Rather than orchestrating situations, or seeking a specific arrangement, he collects images of what he comes into contact with – of what surrounds him. There is an edge that exists within the work, at times it is due to content, at others it results from the detectable intimate exchange between the artist and his subject. Marcopoulos’ imagery does not follow a theme, and is seemingly entropic at moments, yet is cohesive when considered as a whole; the common denominator is a palpable sense of genuine presence.
